I also have spyware doctor and AVG, but I also use these.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

You can only use one antivirus program or you will have serious conflict with your system. You can use three or four antispyware program without conflict. Usually more then one antispyware program will find a spyware missed by another program.

Here is an excellent free program, download their free version.

Plus you need a firewall that gives you two way protection. If you have Windows firewall, turn it off as it only gives you one way protection data packets from incoming ports. A real firewall protects you from rogue ports incoming and private data leaving your pc.

Free firewall that is excellent:

Plus it is a good idea to install a free software that will protect you from "zero day attacks". http://www.cyberhawk.com

This are drive by attacks that hit before any antivirus or spyware company has knowledge of them.

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo security suite.

One anti virus, which you have.

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware

And these useful utilities;

Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

Just a firewall.
Personally I use the windows own that has never let me down, tho it does sometimes bloke programs without asking but it's easily solved. That with AVG Free and Windows Defender, nothing get onto my computer without me knowing and it's all free.
If your connection is running thru a router it helps make it safer.

Yes, a bit of common sense. That way you can avoid some of the nasty bits of malware on the net. If anything tells you that your PC is infected, then ignore it unless it is from one of your known programs. Then run them both. It might be worth getting an anti malware suite too.

You need a fire wall, but if you have XP with SP2 then you should have one just check and make sure it is running;
Start up / Settings / Security Centre ( a shield 4 colours ) and activate firewall.
