ANYONE WHO SUDDENLY CANT START THEIR CAR SHOULD COPY THIS for future reference.
We all know it's a problem with your starter motor. If you can find that on your motor, there will be a smaller cylindrical "can" on top of it. That's the solenoid. The solenoid is an electro magnet that pulls your starter motor "toothed gear" onto the flywheel...blah blah blah.
Anyway, just tap (not hit) the solenoid with a hammer handle or metal pipe while someone else starts the car. You just might start your car this way and PROVE the problem is the solenoid. The starter motor will work fine if the solenoid is tap-tap-tapped into cooperation. This will work 5 or 6 times, but not forever. The electro magnet is bad.
Replace them both if you can afford it. Otherwise just the SOLENOID.
If you are really up for a solenoid-starter lesson without the tapping, keep reading.
1. Put the key in the ON position and the car in park or neutral. Emergency brake on tight.
2. Have a short piece of electric wire ready. or a small screwdriver.
3. Do you see the heavy red wire connected to the starter motor? Maybe there is a rubber cap over the bolt. That wire goes directly to the battery.
4. Do you see the heavy black wire? It's not important.
5. Do you see a thin wire connected to the solenoid cannister? Can you easily remove that wire with your fingers? Just pull the plastic connector piece off, nothing will shock you. It's only 12 volts. You will expose a metal blade.
6. NOW MAKE SURE YOUR NECKTIE , fingers, hair or tongue are nowhere near any fanbelts or moving parts... because look out dude...
7. Now touch your short piece of wire from the "blade" to the heavy red wire bolt. Or the short screwdriver can bridge them.
YOUR STARTER SHOULD WORK! And the car should start. Take the screwdriver OFF. Put the little wire back on the blade.
You have successfully by-passed the BAD solenoid and given electricity directly to the starter motor. But only for TWO SECONDS PLEASE!
I hope you are never stranded 20 miles from home with a bad solenoid. Now you can drive directly home, or to your mechanic.
Good luck, Trevor

More than likely it is the solenoid or starter. If possible tap the starter lightly with a mallet while someone is turning the key. It may have a bad spot. If this works you still need to change the starter but you will not need a tow.

I won't recommend jumpering out the solenoid, but if you know a mechanic you can ask them to do it.

Also be sure the car is in Park. Or if it is a standard shift that the Clutch is fully depressed. This matters on some cars.

If it is a standard shift. Just always park on a down slope and pop start yuor car. I drove an old Jeep like that for 6 weeks while in high school. Did not have cash to buy a starter.

Problem with a cable, starting section of an ignition switch, selenoid (most likely) or the starter. But most starters will give a lot of warning. You may have enough juice to turn on the lights but not start the vehicle. Starting takes the most electricity.

starting your car is THE biggest drain on the battery
if you have a 'dead' cell you still may get lights - but it will not have the power to start

first -check to make sure you have no corrosion - the white powder around your terminals - undo -clean with wire brush - then make sure they are tight and secure

if it won't start - it may be the starter or your solenoid - time for a mechanic to solve

best of luck

Sounds to me like you either have a dead battery. You can still have plenty of juice in your battery to run stereo and such but not enough to start car. I recommend you try to jump it first. Otherwise its got to be the starter. If you dont here ANY noise at all its almost always one of those two things.

You can get a whole list of things to check and still never solve the problem, be out some cash and still looking for answers. What we need are details. Make, model and year. What engine type and sometimes size. Standard or automatic transmission. security system(starter cutoff). Let me know here,
