chemical etching is possible, but honestly, why not just get it engraved mechanically? it's cheaper, more accurate, easier, and less dangerous.
i've been working for a metals distributor for 5 years, so i know quite a bit about metals. you can get a chemical etching pen, possibly home depot, but you may have to go to a construction warehouse. they basically use an acid which permanently etches the metal. however, this can be dangerous to your skin, and it can bleed, causing unattractive blurriness. these things are mainly meant for making notes on large steel plates which dont have cosmetic value.
it would be a better idea all around to either buy an engraving pen (cheap, should be less than $25), or go to an engraver and get it done professionally.

Quite definitely. If you have a husband or are willing to do it yourself, buy a polishing pad for an electric drill. This is a rubber disc which mounts onto the drill chuck and has a sheepskin polishing pad. Some water and some jiff and after a little while your sink will look like a mirror. A small disc grinder works better if you have one of those. GL>
