The Internet can be bad for anyone using it in the wrong way. The content of certain sites can be harmful to children, some people use the Internet to lure children and some sites encourage the children to spend money they don't have but this is the same of any activity. With proper parental guidance it can be safe, exciting and educational. Children will be subjected to something harmful as soon as they step out of their front door so we have to be careful as a society not to get carried away in our cause for the protection of our children. There is only so much you can protect them from before you take away their common sense and judgement. You do what you can and teach them values, morals and the ability to make decisions wisely and you hope that they stay safe. Stopping them from using basic things such as the Internet only increases their desire to use it behind your back where you cannot monitor it to protect them.

I m a teacher - and I think like everything else, it has to be monitored red to some extent. I don't mean by constantly peering over your child's shoulder, really taking an interest in what they are doing on there and conversing about it, might be better depending on the age. Serious amounts of gaming that affect work and study, have to be monitored. Like TV children need to be taught responsible usage, and like TV, with younger children, parents should never resort to letting kids play on the computer all day just to keep them out of their hair...so I think the best thing is take an interest, have a good idea what they are doing, chat about the web itself and what it offers and what could be good, harmful or even just grossly inaccurate and make sure any obsessive behaviour is discouraged, and hopefully nipped in the bud...

Nothing is ever 100% "safe". But I think that compared to a lot of things, the internet is one of the safest places for children to learn, interact, communicate and be entertained. There are plenty of ways to protect children while online, compared to going out into the world, where you can't constantly know where they are...who they're talking to etc. Yes, there are dangers, but they are relatively rare and not particularly high risk so long as children are educated about the possible threats they can come across while using the net. xx

anything that can help our children gain a rounded and unbiased knowledge base has to be a good thing, why drip feed education at schools. Letting them explore the world, in a safe way has to be good....
getting rid of the gremlins of the net will be impossible, but as long as exposure to these demons is restricted, then how can it be bad.
Mobile phones are a greater threat to our childs childhood.

It matters what they're on. If they are on Myspace, and they are not old enough, that is bad. Have your local Internet company to put a parental control on your computer. That way, alot of things get solved.

Internet sucked out my adult brain, even after years of education and hard work.
At least I can pull myself away and find it again.
Kids don't get anything structured to rely on for later.
Yeah, internet is no good for kids.
