It means like 1000 things! Seriously. Sometimes, it can be a bad sensor or something minor and you can get the light to go off (clear the code) by disconnecting and reconnecging the battery. Also, Auto Zone will test it for free if the light is on.

Orange means "moderate" issue. Usually some sort of sensor. Red is when there is something dierly wrong with your engine. (yes engine warning lights can be different colors) autozone does free check engine light exams and often a mechanic will do it for free... all cars 1996 and newer have a universal OBD computer before 1996 its a seperate scan tool for each make and some times model of car. If you have the cash you can get a scanner (for 1996 and newer) automobiles for 60-100 at walmart and get a basic list of whats wrong with your car.

The light is your "Check Engine" light, and it usually means you have a bad sensor of some sort, likely the oxygen sensor more often than not. Take it to a dealer, or if you have an auto parts place like Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, or some similar place they will hook up a code reader to the vehicle to read the engine trouble codes, which will tell you exactly what is wrong. Hope this helped.

You do not say what make of car, but first thing to check is the oil level some manufacturers use an orange engine symbol for oil pressure, no oil means no pressure, no pressure means engine wears out real quick, and possibly seizes.
Have you ever thought of looking in the vehicle handbook.

It may need a tune up is nothing to be scared off, just take it to an auto parts store like Auto zone and they will put it on a computer for free. Most of the time is a sensor, depends on what kind of car u have is how much you'll pay for the sensor but is usually less than $100.00

Your engine management system has detected a fault, this may be a sensor that has gone faulty and is sending odd readings to the control unit. Either way it needs to be checked by a mechanic with the appropriate interrogation equipment for your model of car.
The car may seem fine but damage could result if you ignore it.

Engine light could mean anything one of the computer chips is going bad to the gas cap isn't on tight. Try the gas cap first.. if that don't work make an appointment with your mechanic.

Depending upon the type of vehicle, it could mean any one of a number of things - such as the ECU (engine management) being faulty, or sometimes it is simply a service interval reminder. DO you have the owner's manual for your car? What does it say in there?

Its your engine management system light indicating that it has picked up a fault .You need to get a code read out from your diagnostic port that will indicate the probable cause .Regards Mick UK.
