Why are people so crawly when it comes to celebrities?

Take the recent question asked by Oprah Whatshername as an example. Her question has received over 3,000 answers ... not because her question was particular good, but because of who asked it. Sad really, don't you agree?

I do - I am South African and think this country (UK) and the US are really obsessed with celebrity gossip, you really dont find that many people that are interested in celebrity gossip magazines and such like in other countries I have been to. Its so petty! I think people who are overly obsessed with the doings and screwings of celebrities or (alternatively) hang off there every word are the shallowest of the shallow...or maybe just people who prefer not to think, or deal with much more challenging problems we have in this world!

I would agree that some people do swoon over famous people for the very fact that they are famous and with no regard for their nature or if they are decent enough people worthy of such attention. However, this is a questions and answers site so if a question is posted then people will answer. Everyone on here is someone important to somebody else. I answered the question for the points and because I had an opinion on it. I will not answer questions where I have nothing to say, loads of people have already answered with the answer, I have no knowledge on the subject or it is utter nonsense. If that makes me sad then so be it. I won't lose any sleep over it.

Yes agree ,and yes I did answer it and yes it was a terrible question, William Shatner's wasn't much better.
The best yahoo answers celebrity question was probably by Stephen Hawking, he even gave a video response.
Yes I don't get what the big draw to clebrities is and frankly I don't see why Oprah is so famous, the only thing she did beforer her Show was be in the Color Purple. In that case shouldn't Woopie Goldberg have a miltibillion Dollar organization?

I don't care for Oprah myself - I was watching her several years ago and one of her female guests started boo-hooing. Oprah just looked at her and said, "Ooo, you're one of those UGLY criers!" The audience laughed, but I wanted to reach into the TV and slap Oprah HARD! She does have a good magazine, though.

Yes, I agree. Celebrities come from the same background as the rest of us... take, for instance, Robbie Williams and Jim Davidson. Why people would want to crawl to get close to them, I don't know.

Treat them with respect at their achievements, perhaps, but treat them as people, not gods.

I agree with you. I don't think she even bothered to write it. She probably just permitted them to use her name. Besides I think similar questions have been asked here already.
