It depends on the state. Some agencies charge their client a % of the amount they wish them to collect for them. Other agencies will tack on a fee to the amount you owe their client so that the client gets their full amount and the agency still gets paid. Hope this helps.

You can also call the creditor directly and pay the account off, but sometimes they will tell you that they've sold it. If they will allow you to settle it through them (this is usually the case with medical bills), make sure that your credit report shows that you paid the debt. I had different things listed twice because the original company was listed and the collection company was listed. I had to go back and report to the credit agency that it was paid...

Usually, but it may be a hold up. If the fee seems too high try to negotiate it down. If that does not work try going directly to the creditor to settle your account.
