my mother in law wants a pull out faucet for christmas but I notices at thanksgiving that she has a double faucet (separate hot cold). Can a single faucet still be installed??

Yes no problem just get one that has a big enough base plate to cover unused sink holes.

Yes my dear, the H & C lines join on the new one under the sink and therefore giving you hot wtr at the faucet.
Your sink is probably 8" in the kit or 4" in the bath.

After going through Home Depots Kitchen section and looking for faucets: I really do believe they have every tap for every occasion, for every pocketbook available on this planet. Go for it.

You could put in a single, but then you'd have to get one with a wide enough plate to cover the old double holes.
