Most of those who have answered so far described life rather than defined it. I would define it in one word by "Awareness".

Most will counter by the observation that some living things are not aware. I don't think so; I tend to believe in panentheism. That is, in a nutshell, that God is everything but more than everything. Thus everything is aware in different time frames.
