AMD rocks...it will do the same thing a Pentium will do. um....and yes they still make a Pentium.

The AMD Phenom Processor is much better then the Pentium 4. You are comparing a brand new chip architecture with one that was basically discontinued in 2005. Since then Intel has came out with the Pentium D, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad (and extreme versions of each). While the AMD Phenom chip is excellent the Intel equivalent is a better. While the Phenom is available in 2 and 3 cores, intel's lineup (core 2 duo, and core 2 quad) provide substantially better performance, even when applying the cost to speed ratio. The link below demonstrates this.

If we add these phrases in the beginning of your question, you would get different answers:

1. Which is better...
2. Which is worse...
3. Which is costlier...
4. Which is faster for gaming....
5. Which one do you have...

Anyway, I think, as others assumed, you meant which is better. AMD was one step ahead than Intel processors for a long time. It was a bit pricey, but gave best performance. It was also a hot debate, which is better, AMD, or Intel. CNETarranged a duel fight where AMD beat poor Intel 7-0.

But now, the scenario changed after Intel released Core 2 Duo. Core 2 Duo has been considered the best processors in the market for the time being. Even CNET, which always deemed Intel inferior to AMD, gave it a high esteem, choosing it as Editor's Choice and rating it an outstanding 9 out of 10.
http://reviews.cnet.com/Intel_Core_2_Duo_E6700/4505-3086_7-31973836.html

The bottom line about Intel and AMD is: "Intel's Core 2 Duo E6700 offers the best price-to-performance ratio we've seen in a desktop chip. For half the cost of AMD's top-of-the-line chip, you get identical if not superior performance and better power efficiency. AMD surprised us last year with its completely dominant dual-core chips, but Intel regains the crown with Core 2 Duo."

So right now, the best processor title is owned by Intel.

Don't buy a pentium, ever, hot and bad performance to similarly priced AMD offerings.

If you want to go dual core and reap the performance benefits that it can give for gaming and multi tasking then choose intel and its core 2 duo proccessor.

If you want to stay single core or you want to go a bit cheaper for a dual core go for an AMD AM2 64 or X2 (dual core). Depends how much you want to spend and if you play games or not.

The graphics card is really important for gaming performance so you might want to spend more on the graphics card and a bit less on the cpu if you like gaming.

At this point and time, the Intel Core 2 Duo is the best consumer processor on the market. Before this, AMD processors benchmarked better in most tasks.

i am a big fan of amd processors, and yes their single core processors are still better than any intel single core processor, but core 2 duo is the best available today and yes they are better than any amd processor available, in terms of performance or price.ps. check out the quadcore kentsfield

It probably a matter of opinion. I am going to build me a computer soon and look at the AMD duel cores because of price.
