I guarantee this will work and this will be the best answer....if you can do one thing: Plug ALL the access holes, if you can only do some, then trapping or killing is your only option. I do tons of work on homes, one common complaint is about mice coming in at the sides of the overhead garage door under the trim pieces. A foolproof method to stop this is to take steel wool (med or rough) and jam it into any access points. Use a screwdriver to stuff it in well, so it can't pop out. Then take a can of expandable foam (HD Lowes, etc.), wear rubber gloves cuz it's nasty, and spray it into any remaining gaps. When the foam dries, it can be cut out neatly, and painted if you wish. Read the label for temp. instructions. The mice will chew the foam, but not the steel wool.

I don't think a cat is the answer. Mine just brings them indoors alive and proudly presents us with them meaning we end up chasing it around the house for hours! Not great at any time, let alone 3am!

I'm sure there's an electronic/plug in device available that lets off a high pitched tone only audible by mice and keeps them away. Might be worth ringing a pest control agency for advice or just googling for pest control devices.

Oh and the filters on the bottom of the door won't stop em either....I've been amazed during my mouse hunts and chases just how high they can jump, how fast they can run and how they amazingly squeeze themselves under doors which I'm sure are well and truly tightfitting at the bottom. They're so scared, they'll chance anything to escape (including one running up my trouserleg)!!

Good luck........Celine

I have found a poison that works well called Decon. It is not very expensive, its available almost anywhere and i comes in little boxes that are easy to use; you just need to open the box and put in the areas where the mice are. It works quickly, and it must taste or smell good to rodents because the mice in my area actually eat it. The downsides are:
1. You may have to get rid of dead mice if they decide to die in your garage.
2. You will need to be careful that your small pets and/or children do not ingest the poison by mistake.

Isn't there a large variety of spray or bottled liquid repellents on the market. The last time I was in the pet shop there was no end of fox, rat, cat and dog repellents on the shelf. There must be one for meeces available. Ask your local pet shop guy.

If you are suffering from mice infestation - inform the council they should send round a Pest Control Officer to sort it out for you.
It's what you pay your Council Tax for!

I faovor the cat option, mice will stay well away from your house. There is of course the down side and that's the hunting cat bringing mice into the house during the summer :-)
