If you choose not to get an epidural, they give you gas which I hated it is hard to breath with the mask on, I had demerol when my contractions got strong but they could only give you so much when the pain really came I was asking my doctor to give me an epidural cause it hurt so much but i was to far along to get an epidural and I had to feel the ring of fire of child birth..... demerol helped dull the contraction pain a bit but when i was ready to push that hurt like hell and they couldn't give you anything for that you have to push through the pain..... After you have the baby the pain does go away when the baby comes out but just when you think your finished you have to deliver the placenta...... oh the fun of having a baby but all worth it!!!

There are the medications that are given through your IV....they are basically there to just take the edge off. An epidural is administered through a tube in your spine (it sounds way worse than it actually is!) I had both....IV meds earlier on in my labor, and the epidural for the rest of the time. It was wonderful. Still felt some pain, but not nearly as bad. For more details ask your doctor. Good luck.

Take it from someone who had a baby 5 months ago, no matter what pain medication you receive you will still feel pressure. I vote on taking "nubane" I believe that's how it's spelled, it works in the matter of a few seconds and will dull the pain until you can receive a "spinal" if your going that route.

here where I am there's a sterile water block (or something like that) which is supposed to be kinda like an epidural. there's also a narcotic (Demerol?) I can't really tell you sure sure because I never got them =(
