are they plugged in? turned on? is the volume set to mute?

make sure your volume isn't muted (the speaker icon in the lower right tray doesn't have the red circle/hash mark on it), that your speakers are plugged into the computer, that there is power going to the speakers, and that the file you are playing produces sound on some other computer.

Beyond that, you may have a driver problem.

Maybe you have them turned off... click the little speaker icon bottom right of your screen.
You sound driver might be damaged. You could right click my computer and got to properties then find the device manager and find your sound card. There is options there to re instal the driver or to check if it is even there or running normally...
Are the speakers plugged in etc...

not plugged in all the way,no power, drivers not loaded,system muted, ok I give up
