A powerful magnet will erase a hard drive.

To use this method as a way to erase a hard drive, it has to be a very powerful magnet, though.

If the question is whether a magnet can harm a hard drive, I wouldn't even try it with small magnets.

While a magnet will erase data from a hard drive, it would have to be very powerful. From experience destroying hard drives, you will probably bend the read/write head and destroy the circuit board chips long before the magnet is powerful enough to actually wipe the hard drive. But a good magnet will make your hard drive unreadable.

More often hard drives are damaged by static electricity, rather then by a magnetic charge.

YES a magnet will erase a hard drive BUT it would have to be so strong of a magnet that it would also remover the iron from your blood. an electric magnet would do the job easily....it generates a huge amount of static electricity.

May not toally erase the disk but it has a high risk of corrupting your files. It is NEVER a good idea to have magnets around disks or tape. This includes those refrigerator magnets that hold papers/photos to a metal surface.

Are you trying to erase it, or are you asking if it will? If the magnet is big enough, yes it will.

That's what I've always been told, but I'm not sure, but when I worked I was always told to keep the magnet away from the computor, I handled drill bits & had the magnet to pick them off the floor when dropped.

It is not easily affected by electronmagnetic radiations. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

Yes, it will. A vacuum cleaner works well too if it's magnetic.
