A doula is a woman who is trained to help mothers through labor and birth. She will do what she can to assist you, she'll suggest coping techniques, she'll suggest things that Dad can do to help, she'll explain the risks and benefits of procedures and meds, she'll help advocate your wishes to the staff of the hospital, etc.
We had a doula with two of our three births. After our first was born, my DH said having a doula was the best choice we made. Some hospitals will provide one for free if you ask in advance.
Some doulas also provide support after the birth by helping with "mother care" and establishing breastfeeding, etc.

A doula who accompanies a woman in labor, mothers the mother, taking care of her emotional needs throughout childbirth. A doula also provides support and suggestions for partners that can enhance their experiences of birth. A postpartum doula continues that valuable emotional support and guidance, helping a family make a smooth transition into new family dynamics.
Basically, it's a paid nurse and therapist all rolled into one.
