well this depends on where you are coming from and what your current lifestyle is like...parts of Maine are very rural and feel isolated. If you are accustomed to and prefer and more urban setting there is really only one place to live IMHO...and that's Portland.

I lived in Maine for 11 years. I grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved to Maine in my mid 20's. I first lived in Augusta which was way too rural and slow for me. You had to drive great distances to get to things.

Then I moved to Portand and lived there for 7 years (I now live in the San Francisco bay area). I loved Portland...still do. In fact, I think its one of the best cities in the country. Yes, the winters were long but you get used to it and the summers are just awesome.

Portland feels like a big city but without the traffic and high crime. It has a great sense of community, culture, some of the best restaurants anywhere, plenty of shopping closeby, the old Port is great place to hang out - good bars, its on the ocean (and its beautiful) - nice beaches close by, nice parks, relatively safe, arts community, nice people, I could go on and on. Plus, jobs. Lastly, it is only a 2 hr drive to Boston, Portland has a world class airport, and now Amtrak service to Boston as well.

I've been to Rockland many times and like it, I have been to Bangor many times, but these communities just feel too isolated to me. To me these are nice places to visit, but couldn't see myself living there. To each his own.

If you are considering a move to Maine, I highly recommend you make a trip there and experience what life is like. Spend some time in Portland, go out to dinner in the Old Port, go to the Eastern prom, walk up Congress street, walk around the Back Cove, drive out to Cape Elizabeth and go to Portland Head Light and walk on Crescent Beach. This will give you a good feel for this area.

good luck.

I grew up in Maine and lived for 10 years up on the Canadian border, then another 10 years further south in the Bangor area. Some summers I lived on the coast in Bar Harbor. I have to say that the Bangor area is probably the best area in terms of convenience, opportunity, educational opportunities, and quality of life. The school systems are good, such as Hampden, Hermon, Bangor, Brewer, etc. University of Maine Orono is very close by. Portland is only a 2 hour drive, the seacoast is less than an hour away, and the mountains are a little over an hour away. Things are a little more laid back in that area, and yet there are ample opportunities for everyone.

Bangor. It's in the middle of just about everything: Baxter State Park, the Moosehead Lake region, Camden Hills, and Acadia National Park. You won't find better recreational opportunities than here.

The city is small, but large enough to support several shopping centers, including the Bangor Mall, Maine's second-largest indoor mall. The city is next door to Orono, which is the home of the University of Maine, which has the Maine Center for the Arts and the state's only NCAA Division I sports fields and arena. The men's hockey team is among the best in the country, and the baseball team is among the best in the Northeast.

The city is home to Little League Baseball's Senior League World Series (14- through 16-year-olds), held every August; the American Folk Festival, held every August; one of Maine's two full-time harness racing tracks; one of Maine's two major airports; and the Bangor State Fair, which is one of the largest in the state, held every late July and early August.

The school department is one of the best in the state.

Fairly large police and fire departments also make the city among the safest you could ever live in.

I like York, Portland, and the Bangor areas.

York - Beaches and next to NH for tax free shopping
Portland - Big city feel in a small package
Bangor - Gateway to the mountain and lake region, plus a harness track with video slots

relies upon on the way you define "properly-related transportation links". in case you decide on public transportation like Europe has(rail provider). you will no longer discover that enormously plenty everywhere in the U. S.. some places like Boston and manhattan have solid public transit structures, yet Maine does not. From Boston, you are able to take the Amtrak to Portland, ME. as quickly as your in Portland, there's a public bus provider, even though it particularly is attain is constrained. you fairly want a private motor vehicle. with regards on your different standards, in my humble opinion maximum any city in Maine has low (0) crime and is rural. usually conversing maximum human beings of inhabitants lives in southern Maine. Brunswick to Kittery and close to to the coast (alongside the I-ninety 5 hall).

Rockland, Maine. There is alot of activities in the summer, beautiful waterfront restaurant, museums, shops, etc, all while still having the small town feel and the people are friendly. Type it into your search engine. I know you would love it.
