Very simply the Wars of the Roses were a series of wars fought between the House of Lancaster and the House of York in England between 1455 and 1487 for control of the country, both houses having descended from the earlier king, Edward III. The two sides took respectively the red rose and the white rose as their badge or symbol, hence the name. The wars came to an end in 1487 with the death of the last Yorkist king, Richard III at Bosworth. He was succeeded by Henry VII of the House of Tudor whose lineage included both sides

IIRC, the War of the Roses involved two branches of the royal Plantagenet family, who had competing claims for the British throne. The House of York, represented by Richard III, had a white rose on their family coat of arms. The House of Lancaster (later called the Tudor family) was represented by Henry VII (father of the infamous Henry VIII), and had a red rose on their family crest. Eventually, the Lancaster/Tudor family won out.
