I just got my BF an autographed first edition hardback book of his favorite author (used book, vintage). I think he'll really like it and it was under $100. I also got him other stuff but that's his big gift.
If there's something he likes that you don't (e.g., ice hockey, for example) tickets to a game for him & a buddy would be a great gift. Don't forget to include $$$ for hot dogs & beer.
If you are crafty you can make him a stocking with his name on it (needlepoint or cross stitch or even glitter glue for the crafty-but-lazy person like me!)
Or if your budget is lower how about an ultra-deluxe car wash for his beloved car? Or a gift subscription to Sports Illustrated or another magazine of his interest? Magazines are such a great gift because they are ususally pretty inexpensive for a year's subscription and they will rememeber your gift all year long. I'm not a fan of gift cards in general, but an iTunes gift card might be good.

You could buy him a nice watch or a nice jacket. You can always pay attention throughout the year to what people are saying and if they say they don't have something or would like on of "these" then when there b-day or xmas comes you can get them that.

Tell him to set up a wishlist on amazon, or search to see if he already has one. That way, he can put stuff that he really wants and you can pick one, and it will still be a surprise.
Or book a mini break away somewhere for the two of you

What does he like? Is he into Electronics?, Video Games? Movies? Music? ask him what he likes or bring it up and ask if there was anything he was really wanting for christmas.

Give him a giftcard because that way you dont stress yourself out worrying what to get him and he can buy it himself. And they have visa giftcards now. Trust me it works
