Go to a junkyard or salvage yard and find a airbag. There is no cover you can put except to just fix the original one. The airbag unit is a complete unit cover and all. There is no way to turn off the light without using resistors to fool the ECU into thinking there is a airbag. The easiest solution is to take the bulb out.

oklatom is right here. If you sell it without telling someone that the airbag doesn't work, and they have an accident, you will probably be liable for damages. The buyer's insurance company will come after you with a team lf lawyers. If you're driving a 16 year old car, you probably can't afford all those medical bills, lawsuits, etc. Either replace the airbag or sell it for parts.

If it was me, and I decided to replace the airbag, I'd probably take it somewhere and have it installed by someone who knew what they were doing. If you set that airbag off trying to install it, you're out $800 in a flash. The $50 or $75 it would cost to install it is cheap insurance.

If you don't replace the air bag, you will be out of compliance with the federal safety standards for the vehicle, and will not be able to get insurance. Spend the money and have it done, or replace your 16 year old car with something newer and junk it. If you sell it, make it plain it is being sold for PARTS ONLY and had a defect which would keep it off the road.

I am pretty sure it's illegal or you won't find a bodyshop to fix it without putting a airbag back in it.... after all they don't want to be held liable when you get into a wreck and try to sue for injuries.... It is also illegal to sell the car without informing the person that there is no air bag in it & I would get them to sign something stating it's not there in case they get in a wreck. ( or better yet to a salvage yard)
