He wanted to kill the Potters because they were part of a resistance movement to over throw him plus harry's mom was muggle born so she was what was called a "mud-blood" and he hated them because he felt the only ones that should be allowed to perform magic were pure-bloods he didn't know that Harry would have any effect on him so it wasn't like he was after harry and his parents got in the way. In fact the only reason that harry didn't die is because of the magical protective charm of love that his mother performed by getting in front of Voldemort to protect him. I believe this is explained in book 2 or 3 where they are talking about the basillisk...By him being accepted into his aunts home each summer this charm is renewed so it doesn't loose it's strength.

Snape heard part of the prophecy and told it to Voldemort. Voldemort, wishing to have no barriers in his universal power, set out to destroy his rivals, which included Harry. And of course, Lily and James wanted to protect their son, so they were killed as well. However, here's a theory....i think Snape is innocent and this is why: he went back to Dumbledore's side before Voldemort killed the Potters, and therefore, proved himself a valuable asset in rescuing Harry. How? Why? We can only speculate, but I believe that he was in love with Lily and owed a life-debt to James, which we know means something special in the wizarding world....so, acciobook7.....but until then....

He did not particularly want to kill the Potters. He was after Harry, as retooser mentioned. He belived Harry was the boy mentioned in the prophecy of his death and wanted to eliminate them. Harry's parents tried to protect Harry, and so Voldemort killed them. I think he even says somewhere that they had to be all "noble" and so they died.

He wanted to kill the potters because they were against him. Voldemort wanted to control the magick and what nots. He killed most of the people who opposed him.
He just couldn't kill harry because of the fate thing.
UGH I *HATE* this story. I have boycotted the books after I found out that the author is very rude to her young fans.
