A former friend's father (who is an ex cop) performed a background check on my husband and myself before we moved in to help them out. Did they have a right to do this?

We ll if you want a job they have to check your background because that s the law i give u a example let say you going for a security if they don t check your background you could be a criminal and you could use that gun to shoot someone or assult someone that s why it s very important they have to do a background if you fill out a apprecation you say say no for background you most likely won t get a job. Just like the bar when a man murder the girl and dumb her on seaview av near the belt parkway he was on parole and the bar owner didn t check his background the police find out by matching his dna on the gloves sheets and using her cellphones the cellphone was on and they trace her number to him and he got arrested? you see why it s so important they have to do background checks?

It depends on the state in which you live. Laws are different from state to state.

Many places require a consent form to legally get it done. There are web sites out there that let you do it whether you have consent or not though. The best place to check would be with your state's attorney general. If they can't or won't provide you the information, they might be able to tell you who could.

It all depends what sources that person accesses during the check. Only police can do a background check of driving records and criminal information. But much information is public, such as any arrests or places you have been a resident.

Heck, all you have to do is go to Yahoo Services and order a background check on any poor sucker for a fee.
