You know I see your point. Yet, I must state that slavery has been around for WAY longer then 300 years. Try more like thousands of years. Since man has been recording history there is evidence of one race oppressing another. Jews were slaves, Irish were slaves, Chinese were slaves, Africans were slaves, Arabs were slaves, Poor white British women were enslaved and sold as wives to men in the newly founded U.S., and the list goes on and on.
Honestly, the whole world owes the whole world an apology. We should all be tripping all over each others feet to get past the whole slavery issue. I live in TODAY. TODAY we are free. I am American Cherokee Indian and I don't dwell on being a slave. I am a free woman living a good life. An apology for the revolting treatment of my forefathers just doesn't cut the mustard. So, we all just need to learn to get along and work our own crops.
Good Luck and Take Care

It was just another mindless publicity stunt , panderring to the loony left.
Apart from anything else,Britain as a nation had no involvement in the slave trade. Some british naval officers ,many other individuals certainly did have involvement. However, arabs , and indeed african blacks themselves bear the greatest responsibilty.
Britain played the crucial roel in the abolition of slavery throughout the globe.None of britains colonies entertained slavery.
Im sorry if some of the misinformed loony left disadgree, but as usual your knowledge is limited to what other loony left would like you to believe.Facts are available from genuine historical sites.

His apology is meaningless. No apology given on behalf of others can have any value. In a hypothetical situation, someone who traffics human beings and sees the error of his ways can try to make amends and/or restitution. In this case his actions have some meaning. I can't see the point of apologising for some activity in which you haven't taken part. It's just gesture politics.

He should also apologise for concentration camps where about 22.000 children were incarcerated, long before the Nazis had ever thought of concentration camps.
I see the vast majority here seem to think 'let sleeping dogs lie' would be the best policy, why didn't we let the Nazis just forget it then?
Best not to talk about the English and the Irish potato famine?
Perhaps history will forget it all?
It has been said that we learn by our mistakes. how can we learn from them if we dont remember them and also regret them?

Listen I am an African American born in Alabama and now living in Canada. I care about Slavery and so does every person in my family as well. Slavery is and always will be a horrible crime against humanity, and any people who have taken part in it at all should apologize for their part, see if we have a part in something we should take responsibility for our own stuff. we can't make others do anything really all we can really do is know what is right--right for us and then be brave enough to do it. I often Apologize to Jewish people for what the Phillistines (who were described as Black) did, because i am black and those were my fore-fathers, i don't expect white America to apologize for their part in slavery because it is clear they are not ready when they are ready they will and the same for the Arabs and everybody who has ever had a part in Slavery. my moto is if i feel it is right i will do it for my own peace of mind-live and let live, heal harms and live in peace

It means nothing. I watch BBC breakfast news the day it was announced and there was some crazed woman whining on about how she doesn't know her own religion, culture or her family. If she bothered to take a DNA test it would tell her which part of Africa her ancestors came from and she could go from there.

There is no value whatsoever in this, it was a cheap publicity stunt as he had nothing important to say to get in the papers that day.
It wasn't Blair apologising, he was apologising on behalf of the country, but it still can't make anything different, or take back the pain caused in those days.

Why is Blair apologising for something he didn't do. I don't expect every Italian person to apologise for the Romans using us as slaves. The world has gone p.c mad!!!

slavery was started by the arabs??? What?? Seriously, read a book. Slavery has existed for a long, long time, and was started and still continuted by a lot more than the arab nations. As for the appology, it does have meaning as it is a symbolic gesture to acknowledge that it wasn't a very nice thing, and won't happen again by the brittish. Now everyone can stop complaining and look towards the furture instead of harping on the past

No value. Blair is just trying to draw attention away form his inadequacies. With a bit of luck he will end up in prison for trying to bribe people.
If you think that the Arabs will aplogise for anything, you are living on the wrong planet.
