The cons of a solo practice are just what you mentioned - availability at time of birth, plus availability throughout your pregnancy (vacations and emergencies), plus availability by phone at anytime, esp. night.
With a group practice, if your doc is out sick, vacation or other, you will always be seen by another obgyn who will has full access to you records. Towards the end of your pregnancy, your appointments will be with a different doc in the group each time, and one of them will be the on-call doc when you are delivering. It maybe your regular doc and if not, at least it won't be a total stranger. Also, there is always a doc on call at night, to be reached by phone, or meet you in the hospital.
Good luck.
