Punish employers who hire illegal immigrants with jail time and/or huge fines. The same for people who rent housing to them. No jobs and nowhere to live will stop them from coming.

The biggest step anyone could take to lessen the number of illegals coming into this country is to make it easier to get into this country legally. People don't just cross a desert or get into a storage bin or float into the open ocean on a raft because they feel like it, they do it because they feel desperate and there is no other hope for them of getting into the US. US immigration cherry-picks who can come in from what country, and has quotas limiting the number of people who can come from where. As a result, people who are extremely poor or don't have a lot of education have a limited chance of legally immigrating here, especially if they are from countries that are poor overall. If we abandoned the quota system and made the effort to process and accept as many applications for immigration as we got every year (of course rejecting security risks and criminals), people who now cross the desert to get here would be able to come in legally, and wouldn't be a problem. Then, too, we would know that someone sneaking into this country has a real reason we don't want them here, whereas now we're mostly prosecuting illegals who just want to make a buck for their families or themselves.

hold the business who hire them responisble. this is one of the very few areas the republicans really need to look at. I have seen some very high political and social republicans support businnesses in this area and I dont agree we should condone it. Their belief is that it would destroy the infastruction of business from construction on down. It has already been so ingrained in business that cracking down would hurt them and the economy. I can see what they are saying but to just let it continue isnt the right answer.

unless Mexico becomes a better nation or the US becomes a crappier one you aren't going to slow the Immigration rate... the best thing to do is to make it easier for Mexicans to become US citizens so that they can legally enter the US and work for a living rather than live off of the system. hell, you could even hire them to help secure the border because obviously they know all the best ways across and if they can do it, so can a terrorist :)
