There are three reasons:
1. A pastoral journey to the Catholic Church in Turkey, with its various ritual expressions (Latin, Armenian Catholic, Syrian Catholic, Chaldean).
2. An ecumenical journey to the Eastern Orthodox Church with a meeting of prayer and dialog with the Patriarch, His Holiness Bartholomew I.
3. A journey under the banner of interreligious dialog with Islam, the predominant religion in Turkey.

The only real reason for the Pope's trip to Turkey is love. He is there to manifest that love (the sort of love that the Gospel and therefore Jesus Christ bring to the world) is the only remedy to hatred, violence and war. You will not understand the Pope's trip to Turkey unless you see it in the light of his first (and only to date) encyclical, entitled, "God is Love".
Hope this helps.
