The speed of your computer or the amount of free space has very little to do with How fast it will serve you the internet. the only impact of performace is in the playback of downloaded media. The main factors that govern the speed that you can download are the following

1. speed of connection ( dialup or ADSL / Cable )
Obviously broadband is faster, however a poor placement on
a multi user connection pod can mean that you get poor performance in accessing the internet. This discounts the point of your broadband working properly in the first place. (as many people are poorly connected or have bad connections in their telephone circuits)

2. Firewall settings.. is your firewall "Blocking you"
Most ADSL / Cable routers already have a Firewall built in so this is not as dangerous as it sounds. To see if you have a conflict with your PCs software firewall, experiment by temporarily disabling the software firewall (like zoneAlarm or windows firewall) this will give a pretty much instant indicator whether you are conflicting with your firewall. to resolve Firewall issues pseak to your internet service provider as it can be quite complicated. if this is your problem it does not matter which browser you use, all will have problems.

3. Correct internet settings, Can IE actually "Find" the internet.
In Internet Explorer check the "Automatically Detect Settings" checkbox in your connection's settings page (for those using dial ADSL go to the settings for your relevent connection in tools >internet options > Connection (tab) for those using cable use the LAN settings section to check the same option under that section

4. Spyware...Soo much Spyware....and it's using "your" internet
No single tool will find "ALL" spyware myself I use several to keep my system spick and span... the best ones I have found are Spybot search and destroy, Adaware (personal).. both free versions and Spysweeper, subscription service 30 day free trial, which you can use without having to subscribe. if problems persist there is also Hijack This, which will give you contol over all program initiations, BHOs and Active-x controls, however if you mess with this you can ruin your configuration. although it does allow you to re-enable disabled items.

P.S. Data compression services only really compress text, as multimedia files (movies & Audio) are already highly compressed so it's more likely that if you are downloading multimedia it may accutally take longer to serve (as encoding and decoding is required) ;)

Well, you can speed up your internet connection by using a different form of it. Go with DSL instead of Dial-up. The price difference isn't much. You can upgrade your "memory" on your computer. That is known as RAM and you can buy it at any local electronics store. Just remember the model # and manufacturer of your PC. You can also close all programs while using the internet. Your processor won't have to work as hard.

Try Google's Accelerator. It does speed up page loading somewhat. The rest is in your internet access, dial-up, DSL, etc. More memory will help some, then the computer doesn't have to work so hard finding and loading pages.

well there are many ways get a system with a higher cache or get 5.0 with DSL, get a wireless router with speedbooster (need a wireless card also with speedboost) Also your system can be slow if you have wireless and people are stealing it, just protect it..the more people on your lan the more traffic you will have. There are so many reasons that it can be going slow...especially if you have minimized a game and so on....

If you are using a dial-up connection there are programs that actually speed up your connection, some of them are only spyware so be carefull, if your using a dsl/cable connection try to unblock your applications from your firewall and consult your network provider.

Well, by changing the things that are intrinsically related to it... such as your AV, firewall and browser. Try using firefox, its neat. If you have norton, then panic, cos its takes up a lot of ram. try AVG.
