As a previous answerer mentioned, reading a lot is the best way to acquire new vocabulary. For word synonyms, Roget's thesaurus is an excellent purchase. For punctuation, I recommend a book called Eats Shoots and Leaves by Lynn Truss. It has the advantage of being funny, which you don't often get in grammar books.
There are many places on-line where you can find grammar exercises and tutors. Be sure when you search you spell it correctly: G-R-A-M-M-A-R.
Good luck.

Buy the "Little Brown Handbook" or MLA handbook. I like the Little Brown Handbook best--it is always on my desk. Yes, in Hardcopy! These resources are a good, quick, general guide to proper English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and also contains exceptional general information about writing--including research papers, letters, resumes, etc. In other words, it helps teach you how to write (or speak) what you want to say in the WAY you want to say it.
I use mine so much, it is held together with duct tape.

Hurrah for that dwindling breed--people who want to speak and write well!

An excellent resource is The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

You're looking for correct grammer. I don't know where you'd look it up, but when you do, look for grammer. Or proper grammer. That'll be the key word.
