I'm a new military wife. My husband is an Army Recruiter, and this weekend is their Annual Training Conference. Spouces are welcomed to attend classes held durring the weekend and at the end is an Awards Banquet. My husband has to wear his dress blues, and I have a floor length formal black gown to wear. But as far as assorising, what should I do? How formal is this going to be? I love getting really formal, but I don't want to over do it. Can anyone give me a heads up for what to expect?

I posted this in the miltary section first but got some rude people making uncalled for remarks... please only answer the question. Thanks, to all who provide a good answer!

On a "scale" of formalness, Army dress blue (iirc) would be the equivalent of a standard tuxedo, so the black gown should be fine. As far as accessorizing, a nice watch and an understated necklace would be okay.

I retired from the military after thirty years of service. There are different types of dinners, some are extremely formal and not usually open to the spouses, others are slightly less formal and still others are quite casual. I suggest you ask your husband for advice, if he doesn't know ask him to ask his boss, or better yet, get the number of his bosses wife and ask her. If that isn't possible, opt for ultra-conservative, then see what the other women are wearing then go from there.

I think that less is more...especially on a formal occasion...keep you hair, makeup simple and maybe wear a plain necklace or just a bracelet....not to be offensive..but I think you're there to be with your husband..and not to be the center of attention.....hope that might help you a bit! Good luck and have fun!!!!

From the pictures that my sister in law sent me from her husbands military events they are pretty dressy. So have fun and get dressy! But if you are worried still, just ask other military wife's around the base. Melissa said that they are pretty friendly.
