I have this great dress for an upcoming dance...short & black with a band of gold sequins down the front. But I don't want to buy gold heels to match and I already own a pair of gorgeous strappy silver stilettos. Plus I already own silver jewelry and don't exactly like the idea of buying gold accessories to match this dress. How critical is it that I wear gold with gold??

It's critical to some people. But you don't want to make yourself a canvas. If your dress already has some kind of ornament, then let that be your jewelry, and wear some black heels instead. The same rule with make-up applies to dress...Less is more.

I suggest black heels... a great pair of black heels are a really good thing to have in your closet, they can be worn with so many things. And I wouldn't wear silver jewlery with gold. I know a lot of people mix jewlery but I personally don't like it. If you don't have a problem with it than go for it. If you feel good then that's all that matters. If you do deside to go for the gold ;) you could always go to Wal-Mart or Target and buy just a pretty pair of gold hoops. They're pretty cheap and nice to have on hand for just such an occasion as this.

No matter what just feel good about what you're wearing and you'll look great. Have fun!

When it comes to mixing gold and silver jewelry it can look trendy if it's worn in conjunction to similar style pieces. I have many bangles that incorporate both gold and silver in the same piece, same with watches.

BUT when it comes to an outfit that has a large gold detail I wouldn't advise mixing the silver shoes and jewellry. They will compete again each other and just make the outfit look generally overwhelming. And I'm sure your not trying to compete with the christmas tree!

Just pick yourself up a pair of sparkly gold, dangly earrings (they won't cost but $5 from Claires) and a pair of simple black shoes and you will be the bell of the ball. If you are dead set on wearing your silver shoes and jewellry I would advise looking for another party dress.

imo, you should go ahead and buy the gold accessories. i think you can actually wear gold and silver together but it has to be done right. i've seen it done right if these are the only two colors involved. you should either exchange the dress or buy the gold shoes. if you buy the gold, at least you'll have it for other outfits or the next time you wear this dress. i'm just afraid that if you wear the silver with this dress, it will cheapen the outfit. try it on and see what your friends or family think.

You can get a two-toned ring. Otherwise, if you prefer yellow gold then go with yellow gold since wearing white gold/platinum in one hand while you wear yellow gold everywhere else wouldn't look good. As for you wedding bands, you don't have to match. Each of you should pick a band that you are comfortable wearing.

most of my jewelry is costume ---

To get an idea of what it looks like and the effect of silver with the gold on the dress --- invite over a friend -put on your dress and the accessories you mentioned and watch their reaction to what you are wearing.... I have pictured it in my mind and it doesn't work for me --- wear black heels with the dress and get something gold like earrings and a necklace to wear with the dress.... asks your friends or family to loan you some gold jewelry/accessories(surely someone has a gold purse or a black purse with gold accents)

put a silver pin on the dress also or wear a silver belt, that will make the dress both gold and silver and the silver accessories will work better.

Check out one of my questions... I asked nearly the same thing... and one guy said that silver and gold compliment each other like yin and yang...
