I hate to point out the obvious, but white-wash is a type of wood covering, much like painting, but cheaper. It uses lime and chalk in water to paint over a wooden surface to protect it from decay. It washes off after a while, and has to be repeated, but doesn't cost that much.

There are no negative or racial connotations to the term white-wash. Unless you're not really that bright.

I think there's there's another word in Tom Sawyer that publishers are going to have a harder time publishing than "white-wash"
