It seems every-where you go people are doing things that seem pleasurable to me and expecting sponsorship eg. cycling across America (and I'm not talking about Jane Tomlinson) Surely it is about suffering putting yourself through something to actually feel like you've earnt the money like holding your breath for five minutes.

on the surface i think it is because we see a need. we want to help others. but in our subconscious mind, this is the opportunity for recognition. someone will appreciate it and this Will make us feel special and needed. the ulterior motive behind charity work is that someone will recognize you and tell you how nice you are for doing that. i believe its called narcissistic egoism. it is actually quite selfish.

I'm confused. Are you angry that you feel put upon to sponsor everyone who comes up with an idea for a favorite charity or are you wondering why people do things for charity in general? I am going with the second part of my question, although please do correct me if I chose poorly. People do for charity (at least those I know) because, "There but for the grace of God go I". In other words, we do it for those less fortunate than ourselves. It's a 'pay it forward' idea to an extent. It's also a matter of being grateful for what you have and feeling compassion to those who don't have anything. Hope that helps.

I do things for charity because, it is my way of paying back all the good things I have. While I am poor financially I have more time than money, and what better way to use it that helping others to help them selves

Because if you are well-off, and someone else is not, then it's just nice to help them out. Life is about sharing, not taking.
