If you're in high school, join the drama club. Even if you want to go into TV or movies, a lot of actors who did stage acting first end up being the best actors and actresses on TV and in movies. Remember to audition for the shows and give it your all. Take classes if they're available at your high school. Get tips from the director if you can get close enough to him or her. If your school has a Thespian troupe, look into joining. If you're not that old, you may have enough time yet to get enough stars to join. You earn stars by participating in theatre around the school.
If you don't get into the play when you audition at school, do tech work so you can still learn about theatre.
Take acting classes locally as well. See if there are youth acting groups for you to join.
If you're in college, it will be both more difficult and much easier on you to participate. It's easier because there will be a LOT more classes to choose from (assuming you go to school with a theatre program) and you'll be able to learn about the craft. You'll also have more plays to audition for, because colleges generally are able to put on more shows than high schools. However, if you're just starting out, do not be dissapointed if you do not get cast for a while. Theatre is very competitive, and college theatre is no exception. Also, remember that no matter how good you are, at least 10 people in the department will always be better than you. You will never be the best. You can always get the lead for two years in a row, and then get beat out by some sophomore you never saw coming in your Senior year.
Don't get cocky. You will always have room for growth.
Also, audition for stuff outside of school. Do a lot of community theatre. Again, even just doing tech work will get you experience, because you get to be around the actors.
When you graduate, move to a major city with a large theatre community. New York is not your only option. Cities like Chicago and Boston have a lot of opportunity for professional theatre. But, before all that, you have to become an Equity actor. A lot of professional theatres will not hire you unless you're equity, which means you are a professional actor and must be paid.

Hi there, If you dont have any acting training I would suggest enrolling on a college course so you can get a good base knowledge of your chosen field (ie- physical theatre, brechtian theatre etc). Also, go to your local theatre and see if they have a group that you can join. (sometimes they only want people to work backstage, but stick with it and show you are committed and then you will be able to audition for a part the next time they are doing a play). Also, if you are aged 13 to 21 and in full time education you could apply to the National Youth Theatre - www.nyt.org.uk I would also suggest getting yourself a reputable agent. (sometimes the books are closed and they only have auditions at certain times of the year, so dont delay in finding an agent as you may have to wait for ages if you miss the opportunity to audition - a good agent will not charge you any money to get on their books, the only thing you will need to pay for are head shots and you can use any photographer you want.) When you do get a part in a play make sure your agent comes along to see you and make sure that you have sent tickets to all the other local agents so that they can see what great talent you have! you never know what it might lead onto. You can get a list of agents from equity (the actors union - www.equity.org) if you have any more questions they would be able to point you in the right direction. Have a read of the following - 'Building a Character' and 'An Actor Prepares' by Stanislavsky. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the luck in the world!! Acting is hard work and requires dedication and committment. The rejection can be heartbreaking but just remember that it isnt personal and to stay positive and dont give up on your dream! Good Luck hun! xx

No you do not have to go to California to get into acting or to find a good acting school. Usually in every state there are some pretty good acting schools. If your really serious about Acting Schools, you should find a good Acting Agent. Some of the really good ones are now retired Producers who start up with their spare time courses. Just like Modeling check out their past experiences and what they are known for...My daughter was taught by a gentleman named Phillip Karr in Orlando Florida, his wife is now running the show. But he worked in Hollywood for many years as well as New York and the students had the chance to actually go to LA and meet Producers and so on.....Wish you all the best....

My daughter is a qualified theatre arts teacher and actress. She started in an amature dramatics class at a local youth theatre at the age of eight. Over the years she developed all the skills and requirements to become confident enough to attend professional auditions. The training she recived was valuable and I would suggest that anyone who wants to go into acting should attend an amature theatre group to at least learn the basic skills and get an idea of what is expected of them in this industry.
There is a weekly paper which you can order which is called "The Stage" (UK only, I think) this paper lists all auditions availible etc.

Have talent, drive, ambition, a very thick skin, get into a good school. If you don't have funding you'll need to be prepared to do all kinds of shift work such as: bartending, waitressing, courier, (if you're blessed with good looks modelling), you could even learn spreadbetting (I'm presuming you live in the UK). Good luck!
P.S. I'd like tickets to your first premier!

you could major in it at college.
or go to acting school.
or see if you can get a job with a modeling agency
that might lead to acting.
you can act in community theater, volunteer or paid.
but usually you have to start as a volunteer.
just find out about plays in your community then
find out how to try out for parts.
usually you start with smaller bit parts and work up as
your skills increase.

Audition for your school shows. Also you could join a theatre troupe in your local area. Take acting classes too so you can improve your skills.
