I'm English but don't have a cockney accent....I have a mixture (mostly south-west) which is hard to describe. But yes at least some will still adore your accent. :)
And tell them it's a ENGLISH COCKNEY accent, not a British accent! ;) There's no such thing as a British accent unless you're a mixture of English, Scot, Welsh and N.Irish.

Probably not. They may not understand you, but they'll think you're part of the nobility. Exploit it.
I had a school friend who went to the USA to stay with a family. When she arrived she wrote to her parents, telling them that she had arrived safely. Someone from the family mailed the letter. She was treated very well, introduced to all sorts of 'important' people including the State Governor. Just before leaving she discovered why. Her parents owned a pub. The address on the envelope was, Mr. & Mrs. XXX, The Duke of Cumberland, etc.
She didn't bother to enlighten her host family. Noblesse oblige!

People in US love the English. And we don't know the various English accents. You will find that many of us (not me) have trouble even distinguishing accents from Commonwealth Countries from English accents.
Have Fun!

My son is a professor there. To all Americans we speak English.
They don't recognise English accents. He's a Yorkshireman and they love him,so even a cockney might just get away with it!

Everybody hates the English??? Why would they like your accent. Its the most annoying in the world and being cockney you will probably get beaten up.
You need to re-consider your options. Go tell everybody you are Scottish, that way some people might like you. Start practicing the accent now, wee man!

They won't take the mickey, they'll be intrigued and find you a little exotic. Don't worry, they love British accents.

Your accent will be what you make it. If you consciously wish to change your speech pattern, you will do it. If not, you will very, very slowly fit into the area with whom you associate.
