I have a thater audition tonight for a college play. I need some advice. This will be my first audition ever, I probably won't get a callback, but I'm going just for the experience of auditioning. What should I wear to the audition? I'm not dressing in costume, I'm just wearing something regular, for a contemporary monologues. Should I wear something dark, light, neutral? Please tell me.

You should wear something that doesn't overwhelm you- you don't want to box yourself in to a single look (it might clash with what the auditioners are imagining and rule you out of a role). On the other hand, you don't want to look too plain and be forgettable. Wear something simple, but that expresses the genuine you and flatters your best features (like a nice, simple blouse in the color that makes you look best).

Most importantly, relax and be you. Don't try so much to "play a part," but when you read the monologue, read it as if the words and feelings behind them are really your own. Try to relate to it as if it were something you would really say, do, describe, feel, et cetera, picture yourself in that situation and how you would react. And be expressive! Really let the feelings behind the words come through when it's appropriate. Don't fake or force anything you don't feel, but be sure to let the emotions show in your face.

Don't go in costume, but don't wear something that completely cotradicts the character. If the role is the girl next door, don't wear a slinky dress, for example.

Keep the outfit simple. Wear little or no jewelry. Casual is usually better.

Don't wear clothes that disguise your body. If you are a litte overweight, for example, don't wear a big, flowing outfit. Directors want to see what you look like. And imperfections are good - this isn't a modeling job, directors want interesting people.

Don't wear black, or white, or busy prints. Theaters often have black curtains, and you'll blend into the background. White can be glaring if you're under stage lights. Busy patterns are distracting.

It depends - I usually wear something nice but casual that somewhat suggests the character - but only somewhat. For example, I often wear a blue wrap dress when auditioning for femme fatale roles, because it shows off my figure without being too revealing.

What color you choose to wear isn't all that important, as long as it looks good. Don't wear anything too baggy - they want to see your shape. I also avoid a lot of jewelry - jangly bracelets and earrings are distracting.

And don't wear miniskirts or low cut tops unless you're auditioning for a prostitute.

It can depend on what you're auditioning for. Try to match your attire to the tone of what you're going for. If you're going for a mystery, wear black; if comedy, something bright and outrageous might be in tune... But, whatever you wear, make sure it's comfortable so that it doesn't distract you, or your audience, from your performance. Ultimately it is your acting ability that is key to getting the part, not your clothing. If you are what they are looking for, you'll get the part regardless of what you're wearing.

dress nicely and casual. Nothing to formal and nothing to tacky. Dress comfortable and wear a smile. Have a fun audition! I hope you do get called back. Same happened to me with my 1st audtition. I got called back although i didn't get the part. I still had fun!

Dark colours tend to work better for the imaginations of the panel, but pick an accent piece. A scarf, or brooch, or whatever, that will make you look edgier and make you memorable.
