A prostitute is more associated with sex for sale whereas
a whore is often simply a woman of loose morals....

I think that prostitute and whore are simply degrees of "dirtiness". Like the different between d**k and c**k, - they are the same thing, but one is more dirty, unacceptable, and mostly, insulting than the other - whore is definately more insulting than prostitute. Also, it's a given that prostitution is a trade, as it were, so you wouldn't call just any woman a "prostitute". That doesn't make sense - but if you call a woman a "whore", you'll definately get a response in kind!!
You can probably compare it to two other words too - b***h and c**t. Calling a woman a b***h won't get nearly the fist-flying response as calling her a c**t will!!

A prostitute gets paid...and the whore sleeps around for free.

There actually the same thingbut a prostitute is someone who sells their body for money.(you pay them for sex). A whore is a prstitue but the word is normally used on a person considered sexually promiscuous. or a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.

whore is actually more of a slang way to call someone "easy" or to say that they have sex with many men..
prostitute would be more a literal definition, but if you look them up they mean the same thing

They are synonyms. 'Whore' is simply (according to me, at least) a more refined version of the word 'prostitute' & therefore you find it used more in films, TV serials, etc. than 'prostitute'
