Some may say kinky is derogatory. Now, I know was a time when someone said your head Nappy and you would be obligated to cry but I'm not so sure now. A lot of black woman with natural hair say nappy. Including me when I was natural. It was rough, corse, and NAPPY...loved it.
I wouldn't get bent out of shape, just say..I prefer not to be called nappy please.

Because they have naps in it when they're nappy or uncombed. Looks like Taco Meat. I've never heard any other race besides mexicans call a black person's hair nappy, and i'm sure they got it from black people themselves. The best way I'd say to avoid this is simply to comb one's hair regularly!

Bob Marley didn't think it was derogatory when he sang of nappy heads. I think it originated in Jamaica and not mean to be demeaning, but just as a descriptive. Probably because the hair is not as easily tamed as other types of hair. And dreaded hair, when not taken care of, gets kind of nappy looking, no matter whether the person is black or white or whatever.

I think nappy can be used in reference to anyone's hair as long as it is dirty, uncombed, etc. I dont think it applies only to blacks. I think what you mean is that when someone sees a person of color and their hair isnt kept neat or in corn rows and it's just a huge mass of hair that is fro'd out, they i could see someone saying " that person has nappy hair" but i have never heard anyone say " that person has nappy hair because they are black" or " All black people have nappy hair" Hair is hair no matter ones color and if its not taken care of, then yes, its nappy.

Nappy doesn't necessarily mean ungroomed. Webster defines nappy literally as "kinky", they consider them synonyms. That description of black hair comes from it's similarity to naps in certain types of fabric, not being unkempt.

Messed up thing is that the black people call their own hair nappy. Now I don't agree that anyone can have the texture of black people's hair (the thick, coarse, hair you're speaking of). That's just not true. It may be tangled, but it won't be like our hair. It's just one of the things that makes us unique.
Still, I press my hair. I don't like the kinky (nappy) look, personally.

I'm not sure, but I'm natural and I call my hair nappy sometimes. It's not a problem for me because friends have told me to "press my nappy hair." Whatever! Ironically, I saw a girl the other day and laughed as I told my husband, "look, her hair is so nappy," - she was white. SO, you are right - anyone can have nappy hair.

you know what is funny because everyone think that our hair is nappy but then they sometime envy us when our hairstyles last I had this girl in my school eveyday at lunch she would point out me and my friends hair and ask how do we keep it up then she would start considering us a there like there hair is this way etc. and I had to set her straight and explain to her about our hair you know now she gets it but you know actually our hair most of the time is cleaner then people with straight hair so hey I don't know why our hair is considered nappy but i think that the people who says that envy our hair because there's is thin and weak and easily fall out

No offense but your mom is right. You have blondes, redheads and brunettes. You know those t-shirts that say "whichever hair color" does it better? Things like that only come with three choices: blondes, redheads, & brunettes. Black hair color can't be catagorized by itself. It couldn't say "blacks do it better" because that would have a very different meaning and it would be racial. Brunette means having a dark tone or color. Black would definetly be considered brunette.
