My personal favourite is the cherry shrimp: http://www.azgardens.com/images/shrimp_cherry.jpg
They are small (about a half inch long) and really cute. They eat certain types of algae, and detritous (particles of algae, fish waste, microorganisms and plant matter). They are also very prolific, and if provided with lots of java moss and some floating plants, they will breed easily. They are a little expensive to start off with (try to find some from a breeder or friend if you want), but as I say, they breed easily.
Ghost shrimp are a good choice, too. They eat detritous and fish waste and fish food (if you feed stuff like blood worms, they will come grab it out of your fingers).

They are a big bigger (about an inch) and see-through. However, they are very active, and very inexpensive.
Amano shrimp, THE algae eating shrimp - http://home.austin.rr.com/mwhitten/images/amano%201024x768.jpg grows to about 1" - 1.5". They really keep the tank clean, but if there is not much algae present, you need to provide food (like spirulina pellets or zucchini slices). They aren't really colourful, but they are cute. Price depends on where you get them, they can be cheap or expensive.
That's about it for readily available small shrimp. You can see if you can find a breeder / dealer in your area, because there ARE lots more shrimp types out there.

I keep Ghost /Glass Shrimp in my community fish tank. they stay small ( about t2 inches full grown) and eat algae. I also like Cherry fire shrimp but I don't have any. If there the only thing in the tank you can have 1 for every half gallon. i\If it's to small of a tank though you may have to supplement invert food for them so they don't starve. I hop e you find what your looking for ! Check out freshwater inverts.com

I keep a few ghost shrimp in my Freshwater tanks. They make a great scavanger cleaning up food that falls to the bottom. But, they reproduce like bunnys so be ready for a population boom.

It depends on what type of fish, and how many gallons you have. Also, do you have fresh water or salt water? For fresh water I would recommend Ghost shrimp but some of the more agressive fish tend to kill them. You should really see if your fish are compatible.
