Doubt if it's anything to worry about - happens sometimes with any gearbox. Just let the clutch back up for a sec' and try again, or go into first first, if you see what I mean. It's just that the cogs in the 'box need moving a bit.

Reverse doesn't have a syncromesh on it to smooth the gearchange like the forward gears do. If it won't go in first time put in neutral, lift the clutch and try again. It wasn't uncommon on the Mk1 Focus for the reverse idler gear to strip it's teeth if the driver was a bit harsh with it.

check the gear lever spring it normly breaks, also you have to wait 30secs before you engage the rev gear try pressing the clutch down twice if this helps you have clutch drag which means a new clutch. The early Focus S reg had a weak reverse gear which means a gear box overhaul.

That happened with my Ford Mustang too. Try putting it into reverse. If it doesnt go, let it go into neutal, take your foot off the clutch and try it again. Sometimes going into 1st or 2nd gear and then going back to reverse does the trick.
