I bought a RES from the pet store a couple days ago, and from what I can't tell he is not eating his turtle pellets. I don't want him to get sick. His tank is at about 76 and he has a basking area and light. I don't know what else to do.

Check out the care articles at http://www.redearslider.com or http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for details, but...

Turtles often go into a semi-hibernation stage this time of year triggered by lower temps and shorter days. At 76, the tank is at the lower end of the temp range we'd look for now, so boost the temps 5 to 10 degrees.

Basking light does not tell us much about the lighting, Try a reptile bulb that features UV-B rays as well and set it up for a summery 10 hour day.

Pellets are also not a great diet by themselves. Once you get the other stuff evaluated and changed if needed, try adding some live 'fish food' like small fish, bugs, worms, shrimp, etc.

Final note: Turtles often go off their food a few days to a couple weeks because of big changes- if it is new to this tank, it might take a few more days for the appetite to come back.

Get the tank to about 80 degrees, stop putting food in the water if the turtle isn't eating it and or try a different brand of food. Wait and watch the turtle, it may be sick. I have two red sliders and when I separated them they acted sick, so wait and watch.

Try offering fresh vegetables - some lettuce should work nicely to whet the appetite. Also, contact the pet store and see if they were offering pellets, vegetables, or both (it may just be an unexpected change in diet).
