That's easy. Become the second observer, not the first.

I'm not sure what you mean by your mental realm. Do you just mean your conscious mind, or do you include the unconscious?
If you want to uncover your unconscious, do take great care - we all have some powerful nasties down there.
Unless someone has mental problems, the conscious pretty much sorts itself
If you're determined to look deeper, however, the best and safest way is to learn to meditate with a proper teacher.
Good luck with your self-discovery.

Only by listening to your inner voice.
Like an observer , standing on a highway , you can see thoughts after thoughts racing past in your mind. . If you choose one such racing thought it will take to many asiciated thoughts . If you think of your friend , your thoughts will take to your college / school days and the events there . from thereon you will go somwhere else , thus totally going away from your original thoughts.
If you consciously let the thoughts go , without holding on to any of them, you will see calm descending down within you. It is when you will be able to listen to your innermost voice. That is your awareness
A poor comparison to understand this is to imagine you rolling up your car window shutters . As it cuts down the external noices , you will be able to hear the healthy humm of your engine.

For me, both the study and practice of Dianetics, and later on Scientology, achieved increasing awareness about my self, my mind and my life. I understand my life and mind now much much more than before. (And, of course, there is still more to learn ... )

contemplation and meditation are the two things you can do if you do not believe in a deity, but if you do then you should pray and ask God for enlightenment along with the first two instructions.
