We like to have candles out at Christmas but have recently - and expensively - re-decorated our living room ...is there any way to have candles without causing smoke damage ?

when putting out your candles cover them so the black smoke gets caught in cover. putting out the candles is where you get the most smoke damage not while they are lit

Use LED "candles". They're quite realistic and completely safe. And LED lights are easy on the batteries and have a long life.

you can go to walmart or any department store maybe yankee candle, and they have candle lids for candles in jars that one, make the casndle burn properly and two, eliminate the smoke, they allow the wax to melt evenly and keep the wick at just the right height.

Soy candles work best, but they are often more expensive. But at least you won't have smoke. They are generally smoke-free.

Place candles as far from walls as possible
Keep wick central & trimmed to ¼"
If flame is too high, or wick too long, extinguish and trim wick
Keep candles away from drafts
Do not allow matches or wick trimmings to fall into melt pool
Do not move while burning or gel is hot

Try soy candles (they are supposedly smokeless). Try searching under "smokeless candles" for information and places to find them on the web. Good luck!

Instead of blowing your candles out, wet your fingers and snuff them out, but be careful not to burn yourself.
