It is not free. That's one reason why TAXES are so much HIGHER in Canada than the US.
Many other countries such as Sweden have universal health care, too.

It is not free. Before we moved 6 years ago we were paying 49% of our income to taxes - yes 49%! And we still had to pay into our provincial health care plan - approx. 350.00 per quarter for a family of five.
I don't know if it is different now but when we were there it was a 6 month wait to get an MRI -I heard a mind boggleing statistic back then- there were more MRI machines in the city of Denver than in all of Canada. Scary. Knee surgery that my husband waited only 10 days to have here? A friend in Canada waited almost a year to have the same surgery.
For maintenance health care, check ups, routine stuff like having babies, a broken bone set, it was much less expensive than what we pay here in the US (but that is balanced by the fact we pay a lot less in taxes here).
However, I sure would not want to get sick there and need specialized treatment or high tech diagnostics.

Because it is not in the best interest of the insurance companies or the govt. If they wanted to help us all have health care they would. And to those who think I want it free, they are wrong. I would gladly pay into a system I could afford. I know it would mean higher taxes. That's ok. But as long a large corporations and foreign countries have so much economic and political pull in our country, we will remain in their hands.

Well, it's not "free' because you pay taxes to the government.
Also, virtually every other western, democratic, industrialized country in the world has some form of universal medical coverage. The only exception is the US, which likes to be the "odd man out", no matter how many people suffer.

Sheesh. It sure sounds great when you call it free, doesn't it?
Canadian taxes are ridiculous thanks to government boondoggles such as our bureaucratic, mismanaged universal health care system.
