Money. Human rights and dignity mean very little to him when it comes to monetary values.

I'm not a real Bush supporter so believe me that I really hate coming to his defense in your question.
I like him dealing with China... when he does, it eases tensions so people who feel so inclined can adopt Everytime he says something stupid about China, they tack on more restrictions for Americans who want to adopt their little girls.
One must remember that China is very Vulcan-like. It is the good of the many as opposed to the good of the one which is most important. It's terrible that they introduced the one-child policy, but if America ever faced a food shortage like China has, then we might see the same kind of action against the people the government is sworn to represent.
China is so large and such a force in world economics that we can't ignore them. And trying to force them to our way of thinking just means they would resist it. If one goes to China now, they will see all kinds of what we as American would love to see. There are entrepeneurs hawking their merchandise -- trying to improve their lot in life -- isn't that the American dream -- to improve your lot in life?

Ignoring the 600-lb. gorilla in the corner is not a good way to deal with it. I believe it far better to meet and discuss differences and similarities than to snub him because he doesn't agree with our cultural differences (and abortion is not universally agreed upon in the US). Know you enemies - don't ignore them and you don't have to kiss their derriere in doing it. China is a major emerging power and to chose to isolate ourselves from them is not at all in the long-term interests (economic and from a safety standpoint) for the United States. Don't sweat the small stuff when the future of your country may be at stake.

Because for all his faults, he is a pragmatist (he is now forced to be since the election). He used the Christian-conservative movement to get him elected and reelected. He and his VP have made comments to the same (e.g. Cheney calling them "nuts").

well, you can stop dealing freely with the Chinese government ........ BUT DON'T BLAME OTHER NATIONS FROM DEALING FREELY WITH THEM AND LEFT US STANDING BEHIND WITH ENVY
after the mess in Iraq ......... why is it that people still sought to interfere in the affairs of another country with different ideology?
as long as they did us no harm .......... why do we care what laws they have? and why do we close both our eyes to the atrocity committed by our friends and allies and chose to highlight those of our enemies?

Do as I say, not as I do. Plus, China holds a great deal of our debt. If and when they call it in, the US is screwed.

$$$$
Money justifies anything.
There are ***** groceries here in Seattle.
I stop in one of them just about everyday.
They sell beer wine smokes and porn and they are Christians.
They have religious tracts on the counter.
Right next to the "Horny Goat Weed powder", the fake aphrodisiac.
Same philosophy.
Note: the **** is not an obscenity....it is an ethnicity...but I think it best to self censor.
