It is right to say "how are things?" Because "are" is used for plural (things) and is for singular (thing)...Though I have heard people say "How's things?" which is slang & not proper english. Another one which bothers me is: "All's I know is..." which makes no sense. It's "All I know is" or "All that I know is..." The world isn't too picky about grammar & spelling anymore. I was an English Specialist in university & my spelling is usually impeccable but I am human & do make mistakes. I just let things go usually (especially on the internet) because I know that people aren't fussy & probably don't care & as long as I can guess what they're trying to say, it doesn't really matter. But when it comes to my life when people are talking to me, it bothers me when they say things that make no sense! Oh well...English is a tough language. So many weird exceptions to the rules that it's hard to keep track.

I believe it is right to say "are" as "things" is a plural word.

how are. the previous is a gramatical error. Is doesnt belong in a sentense that follws up with a plural word.

In a sentence, your subject and your verb have to match. If your subject is singular, your verb must also be singular. In this sentence, your subject (things) is plural, so your verb must be plural....therefore, ARE is correct.

When asking a question, you usually reverse it for subject- verb agreement--e.g. Things are how. So, How are things?

I dont think it matters whether it's grammatically correct or not. I believe it depends on the intentions of the question.

"how are things is the proper way "how is things" is spoken in the hills and by those who are uneducated or those who think it sounds cool to talk like a backwoods....
