no animal is low maintence, even rodents. Rats are definitaly a NO NO if you have no time for out of cage roaming time. They require a min. of 24"x24" cage for 2 and you HAVE to have 2 as they are VERY social (does not mean you can leave them alone all day) they require atleast an hour of "out" time during the day to run around, lots of toys, a good exotic vet, and a good diet.
There IS no such thing as a low maintence pet. Just because they cost 10 bucks in the petstore does not mean they WILL NOT accumulate over $400 in vet bills.
If you don't have time for a pet, then don't get one.
GP's are VERY high maintence, requireing a special diet, companionship, and VERY VERY large cages.

really all pets require attention everyday, but I have had a rat, and some mice before, they seem to be the easiest, although I do recommend playing with them as often as you can. Hamsters and gerbils are nasty, and they bite! Rats and mice are actually very smart and very clean, you also only have to feed them every couple of days, just put a hand ful of food in the cage, he will hide most of for later. But really the all time best pet with the least amount of mainteniance is a beta fish. You don't have to pley with them, just feed em' every three to four days, and clean the bowl once a week

Maccaws live a long time. Leave a food tray with them. Not low maintenance though. Any pet has it's own level of care requirement. I'd have to say a Cat, if you'd just leave out the food and water they're fairly independant. You're allergic, so I'd have to suggest pets may not be for you. Just walk out in nature to see animals. My mother has a frog, she drops in food from time to time and he eats it. Other than that he simply sits there. That's fairly low maintenance. Other than needing to change the water every other day. Perhaps that's a good option.

gerbils are very sweet, they are low maintence and dont make much noise, also the are not prone to many cancers so the vet bill stays down. The easist pet, i think is a hermit crab, although they are not very cute. Don't get a dwarf hamser if you can't handle them alot, or they will become untamed and evil. Ferrets are a great choice because they are so quirky and interesting. You would have to get two though, because they might get bored. Guinea pigs are sweet and all, but they get sick easily. Go to www.about.com and search exotic pets.

I say that gerbils are the best. I just got a book, and not only are they cute, but apparently, "what is care for gerbils is neglect for other creatures" Apparently, you can also get them back very quickly, and they are very cheap.
Just buy a good cage, ((Including a bit of playing room, non-barred wheel, and a place to eat and drink)) food, water, bedding, and other stuff and you will be well off. I suggest a Mongolian type.

Guinea pigs also require a lot of outside of cage play and excercise time, so I would suggest a hamster. Get a nice big cage and a wheel and toys so it can have plenty of excercise inside of it's cage.

I suggest a hamster. They sleep all day, and they only need to be played with every once in a while to ensure they don't "attack" someone... Ha ha ha... Easy to take care of, just change their chips once a month and feed and water them every day. Also, fish are a good option. Feed them once a day, change their water once a month. Not too hard!
