Guitar Center has a very nice Yamaha acoustic guitar -- a quality guitar that will last a lifetime -- in a beginner package with gig bag, extra strings, capo, a tuner, two beginning books and a DVD for under $200. It's a very good starter set.
You can get cheaper starter sets, but the guitars won't sound as nice or last as long.
Fender has a similar set for about the same price, but I found the Yamaha guitar to be better quality -- Fender's "quality" guitars cost quite a bit more.

They have guitars and guitar kits ranging from the very inexpensive to the very expensive. I wouldn't recommend spending a lot of money on a guitar for a beginner because you never know if he/she will stick with it. Here are some brand names that are relatively inexpensive but good quality for the money: Fender, Yamaha, Washburn, Jasmine, Epiphone, Dean.

A cheap on ewill be good. I bought my brother an Ibanez I think. Once you get better you can invest more on it. Also there are a lot of coftware's out there you can get to play your guitar along and it teaches you how to play the right way and not get into bad habits.

my brother got some $100 guitar from WalMart, and he's progressed REALLY well. He's moved on and bought a better one, of course, but the first one he had was good for him to learn on.

A cheap one, used if possible. That way if you give it up, you're not out much. And most people do give it up.

Doesn't matter what level you're at, go for the Gibson

Start with a six string and then work your way up.
