Well, nothing really puts the *ss in class like a toilet that has been planted up...

Well now that is a toughie....but do you mean those plastic or small windmills that you can buy from garden centres? They are favourite as at least they have some animation. I always think gnomes are so naff and probably more expensive too.

Better idea to keep the relatives busy with food and drink so they don't look in the garden or take them to the pub or local restaurant.

Gnomes or windmils? Cant decide why not a little of both. Or Hang some lights around the garden, coloured lanterns are nice and let the garden speak for it self.

Well, my opinion is to consider a third option... or four options...

First, although gnomes are traditional, consider two others. Elves or pixies can add an unexpected whimsy to a garden. Also, angels are a nice touch.

Second, I would be fearful that Gnomish Independence Movement would discover your use of gnomes and thus help liberate them.

Third, while windmills can be attractive, unless you are well versed in either the musical "Oklahoma" or the movie "WIzard of Oz", I would stay away from that option.

My touch of class to my Serenity garden/pond is the memorials to all the pets who have shared our lives. Now, I'm not talking uber cat lover here, it's just that we've had two cats who shared our lives for 17 years before their passing. The third cat only stayed with us a year but it was an important year. He had originally been the companion to my grandfather. We "inherited" him upon my grandpa's death. He helped me get through that first tough year and then fell to feline leukemia.

Just a sample suggestion....

Gnomes, I'd say - much more colourful. And what about those concrete castings you can get that try to look like crocodiles half-submerged in your lawn? Oh, and a wishing well with a little roof on it, and a handle sticking out of the side?
After all, it's important that the relatives are suitably impressed as they approach your house, even if your neighbours do ask the council to downgrade their council tax bands.

Gnomes in a garden might be just about the tackiest thing I've ever seen!! Not sure about windmills, but anything would be better than gnomes...

Gnomes

Both are tacky don't waste your money! Have a good tidy up, remove all debris, repair broken fences etc and make sure any grass is cut and edged.
if you want to add anything look at a few evergreens fron the local Garden centre - dwarf conifers, spotted laurels etc which add colour and interest all year round.
As for your relatives let them take you as they find you. be what you are not what others say. Pretend and you get caught out in the end!

Gnomes tilting (jousting) windmills in polkadot underwear. I assume you have time to repaint the gnomes of course. LOL have fun at the expense of the pretentious ones!!

Hey, what about one of those plywood cut-out butt view decorations...the kind that is supposed to look like you are out there weeding? (polkadot bloomers easily painted on)

kisses for the laughs!!

Gnomes and windmills are not classy. I agree with Foo. Get some nice lights. Solar lights or spot lights.

Both, as well as pink flamingos and I saw an adorable garden ornament the other day of the rear end of a small terrier type dog, which I think was ceramic. You place the ornament in the earth as if it is burrowing down into the garden so that you only see the back legs and tail! If you get some flashy garden lights you will really be giving them a bright welcome! Enjoy their visit.
