As others have noted, pleading guilty often results in a lighter sentence. This is because you've "accepted responsibility" for your crime. In addition, in most systems, if you agree to plead guilty, your attorney and the prosecutor may agree to a "plea bargain" where you'll actually plead to a lesser charge, or one that carries a lesser mandatory sentence.
Generally, guilty pleas are not appealable (if knowingly and voluntarily made); convictions are. A conviction occurs after a jury trial; a guilty plea is taken by a judge..

Being convicted of an offense means you are found guilty of that offense in a court of law. It has nothing to do with pleading guilty or not guilty. If you plead guilty to an offense and the judge is satisfied with your plea, you will be convicted of that offense.

Trials cost money, so for crimes that are not considered especially heinous the DA is usually willing to reduce the sentencing if you plead guilty, because justice is served and it saves time and money that can be spent better elsewhere. If someone truly is guilty of a crime, pleading guilty is the right thing to do, as it promotes justice.

If you plead guilty, then you are convicted of whatever the charge was. First one, then the other.
