Essentials to get an interview are U.S. citizenship, valid drivers license, SS#, a correctly filled out application, experience in the field OR education that may be substituted for experience.
At the interviews I ask the same series of questions to each applicant. They include the various questions about experience in the field we are hiring, previous positions, and general information. I ask open ended questions that allow the applicant to depart from the formal questions and tell something about them self, for example, "How would you handle a threat from an employee?", or "What do you feel is the most successful project you have managed?".
Generally we don't hire trainees, we expect our people to be at a level of expertise that allows them to go right to work with minimal break-in time. Sometimes we don't have a good applicant I would be looking for an alert applicant who moves easily through the interview without hesitation in answering. Do not make up experience or guess at answers, by doing that you are actually lessening your chances. Be honest and if you don't know something or have experience in a particular field then admit that if asked. It is important to look an interviewer in the eye. You should have several work related references that can be contacted. I have seen more people lose their chance here for a position because their references were not current or available.

I look for a person that seems able to learn new tasks with ease. If the person gives me past experiences that they have had to adapt to and have been successful at, then I would be more willing to try them even with less training in a particular area. I have found that the best employees are self motivated to perform every task to the best of their ability and are able to learn new task easily. They should also not be afraid of taking on things that are new to them but instead embrace them and do the best they can with the resources available to them.

When interviewing a perspective employee I look for the following
1: Experience that fits our industry
2: A good job history (not job hopping)
3: A good educational background (at least a high school diploma)
4: Leadership qualities (some type of leadership in past job)
5: Well spoken during interview. (displays intelligence)

You will get the standard answers - someone that works hard, put in the extra effort, etc. What is comes down to, besides what is on your resume, is if you click with the hirring manager. You can have the same qualifications as someone else, but if you click with that person and the other one doesn't, then there is a great chance you will be the one hired.

From personal experience I have found that skill sets (e.g. knowledge in a particular area) are secondary to personal traits. Today, in business, things are changing fast. So, the skills in one particular area are less important than traits. Some of those valuable traits are:
1) Adapatability
2) Honesty and integrity
3) A personal conviction to do best in whatever they do
4) Fast learning
5) Team work
6) Get along easily with others
7) Self confidence
8) Perseverance (particularly valuable in sales)
9) Balance in life
10) Cultural sensitivity (if you work in a setting where you have to work with people of other countries)
Remember this. After you hire them, you have the responsibility to give them the support, the appreciation, and freedom to do their job well.

When I hire someone I will overlook lack of training if the person, has certian traits such as teamwork, self-motivation, ability to communicate etc. But most important is the ability to learn and being able to admit to not possessing the skills. Otherwise known as being honest. Sometimes it's better to train someone your self so that they do it your way.

I'm in the sales industry so I mostly hire salesmen but I also hire construction workers because that is what we sell.
Anyway, the number one thing I look for is confidence, especially in the salesmen. Also, a basic knowledge of my company impresses me and this can be attained simply by going to our website or a little word of mouth.
But if you are confident everything else seems to fall in place.

First impressions. Past employment. References. How much you called off other jobs, your performance in general. Sincerity. Body language. Team player is critical. Goals...will you just do what you need to or will you go the extra mile. Paying attention to details, will ensure quality work and not just getting the job done. If you have plans on growing with the company/business or moving on. Stability.

I hire people to work in the IT field so my answers may be a little different from other industries. I look for someone who is 1. trainable to work with the technology that we use 2. someone who seems to care about his image and work ethic and 3. someone who has a good attitude in situations that may not be ideal.
