Now that shopping is a past-time what do you think about going out and buying cds, dvds, clothes or whatever, as a way of enjoying yourself rather than as a necessity?

I have a bit of money and am thinking about getting myself some new clothes, but then I find myself going along with the whole consumerist thing and feeling slightly ashamed. I just wondered how other people felt.

Thanks.

Yes I always feel guilty spending the money that is supposed to be used for shopping only when she is the one shopping.

I'm not a massive shopper. I love food shopping which is a necessity and have a look round the clothes section whilst I'm in the supermarket and maybe buy a few things which I don't feel guilty about.

The only other times I shop is when I need something for an occasion or on the internet, neither make me feel ashamed. But when I shop on the internet, it doesn't feel like I'm shopping shopping because I'm not handing over cash. It's very easily done unfortunately.

I know how you feel. I am not in a good financial situation at the moment, and even when things are better I hate shopping. The only thing I spend money on really is food - I would rather have good quality food and not bother buying clothes etc.

A few weeks ago, I met my sister in town and was carrying some of her shopping bags for her (she has a kid and was xmas shopping). A guy asked if I wanted to buy a big issue, and I didn't even have a pound to give him. I had no money at all for days on end. I know how bad my financial situation is, but I was carrying bags of shopping, and what he must have seen was someone who was quite happy to spend money on a load of 'stuff', but wouldn't give him a pound. I felt like such a piece of s**t. Ok, I could have explained the situation to him, but I felt so miserable I couldn't bring myself to try and justify myself.

When I do have to go out and buy stuff, I do feel ashamed of it, but at the same time I very rarely buy things for pleasure, mainly just for need.

I am glad you feel this though, it is better to be aware than to be caught up in the endless cylce of 'I want'.

I have an insanely hard time spending money on myself; even for necessities. I know I need at least one new bra, but then I start thinking what that money would buy for my children and I keep putting it off. It's not that my children are needing anything, I just feel selfish spending on me. I don't think we should feel bad about buying things we need, but I guess I'm not the only one who does. One small trick I've found that helps me is a rule my Mom always kept for herself. She would only ever purchase something she wanted (or needed) before Sept. started. Things she wanted after that went on a list so her family and friends always had great gift ideas for her; we were always sure she truly wanted what we had got her. I hope this helps, good luck.

Shopping is a pastime now...and I never feel guilty while I am doing it....but I sometimes feel guilty when I am home with my stuff. I feel like I didn't need what I got, and should be saving my money for retirement or something. I don't "need" anything, but sometimes when I am shopping I feel like I deserve it, or it's such a good deal, I can't pass it up....or I work, so why not? The after shop guilt is almost as bad as if you cheated on your husband I swear. And sometimes I feel so guilty, I hide the stuff I bought from him!

Hmmm...well, I don't think you should feel ashamed. Everyone's going to need new clothes sometime, right? I always put some of my money away. Or, donate it a worthy cause. You could always buy yourself a few new clothes and then buy a small toy for Toys for Tots or something like that!

I don't feel guilty when I'm shopping as it gives me a good feeling. It's only after the event that I feel the guilt creeping in. Why should I as it's my own money and I've not robbed peter to pay paul and it's not on my credit card.

Go and blow your cash on what ever you feel like. When you're standing in the mirror in a new outfit that you love and makes you look good you won't care about what you have spent.

Enjoy it

Splurging on yourself every once and while is fine...its when you go overboard and think that happiness comes from materialistic things that you start to lose site of the reason for shopping.
Go ahead don't be ashamed its part of life to treat yourself don't deprive yourself of the pleasure of buying something you know you will enjoy.

I have children, so anything I purchase for myself is a guilty sin to me. Im always thinking the money could be used for something they need instead of me. But when my work boots have holes in them...
